Landscape photography undoubtedly the most practised branch of leisure photography. Holidays are chosen for it. Top locations meticulously marked on the map or entered into the navigation system. Bags full of equipment packed. Arrived at the carefully selected location, put on a bib and photographic feast!
But nothing could be further from the truth...
I was often overwhelmed by what I saw. The Landscape took me by surprise with all its beauty. Too complex.
Beauty for me is simplicity.
That is what I am then looking for.
Portrait photography is the mother of all photography. Perhaps you could say that this is what photography was invented for. Capturing loved ones.
A valuable and honest image that confirms or sometimes adjusts your memory of the person portrayed.
Capturing someone's character is something I don't really believe in. A portrayal of an emotion captured in a 250th of a second that is what you get. Maybe an intrinsic reaction from the person portrayed, or a provoked reaction by the photographer.
A valuable memory is paramount for me.

In architecture photography, the trick is to make it be more than the structure. I try to do this by making the scene slightly less realistic by "making" the light myself.
And by looking for new compositions in an existing composition.
I steal compositions from the creator; the Architect.
I am aware...
My urban landscapes do not always do justice to the builders of cities, if we are talking about beauty and or functionality.
It also shows decay and ugliness.
Often the story you can think of accompanying the image is more interesting. Sometimes texture, light or human interest complements to make and show the image
The love of old cameras and analogue technology. That combination makes me feel like a photographer. You are forced to slow down. Not being able to look back at anything. Fixing the latent image in your memory until the film is developed. The grain and a rawness back again. A nice contrast to the "perfect" low-noise image from a megapixel sensor.
I like to hang my Leica m6 and a Hasselblad 500 CM around my neck to go out.
The name says it all. Toy camera’s, mediocre viewfinders, plastic lenses, leaking camera bodies, unintentional double shots.
Still, a joy to shoot with. A certain unpredictability, not being able to mathematically determine your composition. It is fun.
The beauty of a flower remains. Actually, I find it more photographically interesting when the life is out of the flower.
Why?
I can't quite figure it out yet. It probably has to do with the sweetness being gone.
Unlike carefully planned trips or thoughtful photographic concepts, 'walking 30 minutes from home' gives me photographic satisfaction. It teaches me to look into an environment I know well and which makes me look away from it. It challenges me to look photographically here too.
It begins at your doorstep.
A great discipline, which I greatly admire, but do not master. You can see it in my images. I sneak up on people in my pictures.
Don't dare look at them up close with my camera yet. Nonetheless, I keep trying...
